While water is quite often the most obvious change, lava has had the same physics mechanic applied to it (although it is still a lot slower than water) and there isn't technically a source block, allowing it to flow more naturally.

As lava isn't generated in oceans as water is (at most, it is in underground lakes) lava is a lot more finite than water, and should there be enough lava to fill a bucket, you can still do so.
